“Change also happens when gay people are bold enough to stand up to prejudice, to turn around and confront the asshole who just called you a fag. This creates friction, and in the most tragic cases leads to violence. But I don’t think any of us would be satisfied with the alternative. In light of the attacks, for the next few weeks I imagine gay men in New York will be far more likely to bite their tongue and keep walking when epithets are hurled at them on the street. They’ll look over their shoulder a bit more, be a bit more conscious in public spaces that they’re gay and that some people are “not okay with that.” But my hope is that that caution will quickly wear off and that gay New Yorkers get back to being their brash selves. In the long run, the more gay guys are willing to make a scene when someone calls them a fag, the fewer drunk assholes there will be to call them one.”

“Apple Operations International is registered in Cork, Ireland, but has “no physical presence at that or any other address,” according to the report. Indeed, the corporate entity has existed for 30 years and apparently never had a single employee. Of the three people on its board, all Apple employees, two live in California; 32 of its last 33 board meetings took place in Cupertino, and the Irish director participated in seven of them. Its assets are managed by a Nevada company, and held in bank accounts in New York.”

Dear friends and colleagues,

Starting on Monday, May 12, I will be transferring positions at The American Prospect. My illustrious colleague Clare Malone will be taking over as web editor, and I will assume the position of senior editor, a post that involves more writing.

Albeit with less frequency, I’ll still be editing for the web, so feel free to continue to pitch me. But Clare’s the big cheese now, so ultimately all assignments will go through her. Here’s her e-mail: cmalone@prospect.org.

The past three years have been challenging and incredibly rewarding. When I first joined the web team as an editor, I remember going to my colleague, then-Deputy Editor Ann Friedman and asking her: “How do you learn how to edit?” She told me that I’d learn by doing and by being edited. It wasn’t exactly the answer I was looking for—I was hoping she’d refer me to some book or accelerated crash course—but she couldn’t have been more right: Each writer I’ve worked with and each piece we’ve collaborated on has taught me something about myself as an editor, and this continues to be the case.

No less important has been the experience of being on the other side of the divide; not only have Ann Friedman, Dana Goldstein, Alexandra Gutierrez, Kit Rachlis, Bob Moser, Monica Potts, Christen Aragoni, and Jaime Fuller managed to stop me from embarrassing myself—at least too badly—by example they’ve helped teach me what a good editor is.

I look forward to continue working with and learning from you all in my new role.
